Written for the 1846 Birmingham Festival, Elijah is an epic account of the great prophet’s struggle against every kind of adversity. The dramatic story includes: earthquake, wind, fire and drought, famine, flood, resurrection and ravens.
The composer wrote: ’No work of mine ever went so admirably at its first performance or was received with such enthusiasm by both musicians and audience.’ Mendelssohn died during the same year, but Elijah remains a choral favourite.
