King Arthur is a colourful and vibrantly inventive music-drama. John Dryden, no less, wrote the libretto for Purcell’s 1691 ‘semi-opera’, though he was the first to admit that ‘my Art, on this occasion, ought to be subservient to his’. This concert performance with narration makes an exuberant finish to the debut Aldeburgh Festival residency of Lionel Meunier and his early music group Vox Luminis – praised by Gramophone for their ‘calm interpretative intelligence and vocal beauty’.
