Simon Heffer and Peter Hennessy in conversation

(ends approx. 12.45pm)

‘There is something distinctive and recognisable in English civilisation….’, wrote George Orwell in 1940. ‘It has a flavour of its own’. In this discussion, critically acclaimed historians Simon Heffer and Peter Hennessy present the social, political and cultural flavours of Britain in the late forties. It was an extraordinary post-war decade in which the NHS, the Arts Council and the BBC Third Programme were created – and during which numerous festivals, including Aldeburgh, were launched.
