Philip Shaw conductor

Ireland A London Overture 13’
Panufnik A Procession for Peace 15’
Elgar Polonia; Symphonic Prelude for Orchestra 15’; Variations on An Original Theme ‘Enigma’ 32’

Elgar’s rarely-heard symphonic prelude is an apt choice for a homecoming concert after a Polish tour. Enigma Variations needs no such introduction. Conceived as a personal tribute to the composer’s ‘friends pictured within’ its central slow movement – Nimrod – has come to symbolise a nation, used at times of country-wide celebration and commemoration alike. Andrzej Panufnik’s own musical tribute is a plea for world harmony dedicated to ‘peace-loving people of every race and religion, of every political and philosophical creed.’
