Suffolk Youth Orchestra, Suffolk Young Strings and Suffolk Chamber Winds perform an exciting, varied programme of music for orchestra, string, and woodwind ensembles.
Suffolk County Music Service runs a bespoke programme for Suffolk’s able, gifted and talented young musicians. Known as County Ensembles, these orchestras and bands offer exciting rehearsal and performance opportunities throughout the year.
With around 92 players aged between 13-20 years old, Suffolk Youth Orchestra is the ‘flagship’ ensemble. Ranked amongst the finest of its type in the UK, SYO regularly performs in prestigious venues at home and abroad.
Recent performances include: concert tours to Spain, Germany, Poland and Italy; Britten’s War Requiem in St Edmundsbury Cathedral as part of Britten 100; annual appearances in the Snape Proms; and two, live orchestral film screenings of The Battle of the Somme as part of the international Somme100 FILM project.
Suffolk Young Strings and Suffolk Chamber Winds offer an excellent training programme for those wishing eventually to progress to SYO. Aged between 8-18 years old, members develop specialist instrument and ensemble techniques through the study and performance of a wide range of repertoire.
These County Ensembles are part of the Music Service’s wider ‘Suffolk Youth Music’ programme for children and young people in Suffolk. Suitable for all ages and abilities, it offers musical activities from beginner to advanced levels.
