Bach’s titanic chaconne and Chopin’s sonata with its famous funeral march exert a weighty gravitational pull. But the emotional core of Stephen Hough’s typically taut programme could well be a tiny tribute from Oliver Knussen in memory of Toru Takemitsu – ‘recollections of a few simple bell sounds which, to me, resonate with memories of a dear friend and wonderful composer.’
Hough plays it tonight in tribute to Knussen himself. There are other tributes here too – Liszt’s memorial to Chopin, Busoni’s mighty Bach transcription – and exuberant fantasies from both Liszt and Busoni, as well as Hough’s own original music.
