Part of Aldeburgh Festival

Friday 19 June 2020 - 4.00pm

The beauty of nature, joys of marriage and love both earthly and divine lie at the heart of Messiaen’s great song cycle. A gift for his new wife, its themes resonate with Fauré’s songs, luxuriant settings of Verlaine’s love poetry for his young fiancée.

Sophie Bevan and composer-pianist Ryan Wigglesworth also perform Wigglesworth’s cycle based on the intricate devotional works of 17th-century clergyman-poet George Herbert, and start with Purcell’s exquisite hymn, its rapturous ‘alleluias’ seeming to set the tone for all that is to come.
