Important chamber pieces by Birtwistle, Knussen and Matthews, written in close succession and with a shared interest in elemental power and timelessness, are performed by a contemporary music ensemble bringing together some of the best young instrumentalists in Europe.
Secret Theatre is the classic piece of the period, while Knussen and Matthews’ inspiration in natural phenomena results in rapid-fire, liquid elegance in Coursing and ever-evolving, never-repeating music in Sun’s Dance. Contrast is provided by Britten’s Opus 1, written aged 18, Tansy Davies’ cheeky, jazz-infused miniature, and a premiere by Rome-based composer Caterina di Cecca.
