Schubert Piano Trio in E-flat, D929 50’

The two piano trios Schubert composed towards the end of his life are giants of the repertoire – conceived on a large scale, lyrically touching and ripe with emotional nuance. The second of them, in E flat, features in its slow movement one of the most the haunting melodies Schubert ever wrote, said to have been taken from a melancholy Swedish folk-tune but treated by the composer in a way that makes it truly his own.
