Schubert Sonata in A minor, ‘Arpeggione’ 25’

In 1824 Schubert was asked to write a sonata for a newly invented instrument known as the arpeggione. Half cello and half guitar, the instrument turned out to have no future, but the sonata has lived on as one of the sweetest jewels of the repertoire for cellists and viola-players alike. We hear it alongside one of the two delicious duos for violin and viola Mozart composed to help out a friend, and the precociously eloquent solo Elegy by the sixteen-year-old Benjamin Britten.
