The weekend ends with one of the most popular of all chamber works, Schubert’s Piano Quintet, commissioned from a man he met on holiday in the countryside, and seemingly full of the exquisite joys of the great outdoors summed up by its irresistible variations on his own song ‘The Trout’. Mahler, master of symphony and song, is not a name we associate with chamber music, but the piano quartet, begun when he was in his teens and apparently never completed, is a tantalising glimpse of what might have been.
