Britten’s solo cello works are dedicated to Rostropovich and encapsulate a world of fluctuating emotional states. The link to Russia is inescapable, particularly in the folk-tinged third suite.

These radiant and serene works are accompanied by lyrical, intimate songs by an older generation of Russian composers who travelled different paths, both leading eventually to official censure and exile.
