Britten Winter Words

Britten’s settings of words by Thomas Hardy, composed in 1953, show off his innate skill for clear and effective musical imagery, from the rocking train of ‘Midnight on the Great Western’ to the birdsong of ‘Proud Songsters’ and the creaking of ‘The Little Old Table’. Yet Britten’s deeper genius is to match the poet’s elevation of bleak everyday imagery into the realms of the philosophical by the simplest and most direct of musical means.
