Britten Who are These Children? [Soutar]
Composed in 1969, Who are these children? sets poems by the 20th-century Scottish poet William Soutar – eight brief children’s rhymes in Scots dialect, and four ‘English’ howls of protest at the callousness and violence of the adult world and the suffering it causes to the innocent. The childish wordplay of the Scots songs is brilliantly caught by Britten, contrasting powerfully with the Blakean intensity and compassion of the English songs.
