Patricia Kopatchinskaja is joined by her parents – former members of the Moldovan national state folk ensemble – to play the irresistible music of their homeland. It’s an instrumental tradition whose rapid shifts, constant syncopations and complex cross-rhythms seem to tug the carpet away from under your feet even as you dance on it. It forms an illuminating framework for folk influenced classical violin works, from the gypsy swagger of Ravel’s Tzigane to Enescu’s devilishly potent sonata.
