Music theatre inspired by Satie’s Socrate

Composer Richard Baker and playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker work with contralto Hilary Summers and young artists in developing a music theatre piece about the celebrated patron Winnaretta Singer, Princesse Edmond de Polignac. The new piece focuses on the creation of Satie’s opera/cantata Socrate. It aims to explore the allure of patronage, the role of women in creating a space for radical art at the turn of the century, and the appeal of classical texts and subjects for artists/patrons whose sexuality departed from societal norms.
