The famed suites Handel wrote for outdoor performances have too often had their edges smoothed and wilder extremes tamed since they were premiered in eighteenth century London. Not so under Hervé Niquet who recreates them with thrilling full-throttle fervour. Handel’s crisp rhythms, startling gear-changes and theatrical flourishes are given full voice with an enlarged wind section, noble oboes and braying horns and trumpets capturing the spirit of raucous celebration, lavish splendour and royal pomp. More music for an occasion, the sweet-toned lilting pastorales of Corelli’s ‘Christmas’ concerto provide delicious contrast.
