Housed in the attic of the early 18th century church of the old St Thomas’ Hospital, this atmospheric museum offers a unique insight into the history of medicine and surgery. The original timber-framed garrett was used to store herbs for medicines. Pre-dating anaesthetics and antiseptics, the 1822 operating theatre is the oldest surviving theatre of its kind in Europe. Please note, access to the attic for the specialist talk by the Herb Archivist is via a narrow, 52 step spiral staircase.
