Overshadowed in his lifetime, the music of Charpentier is now seen as pivotal to the flowering of the French baroque. Able to invoke ceremonial brilliance and hushed reverence within a few bars, it brings the drama and mystery of liturgical text to life in music almost operatic in scope. Le Concert Spirituel end its residency by combining sumptuous motets with his best known work Te Deum, its instantly recognisable martial fanfares heralding a work of lavish opulence and exquisite contemplation.
