16th-century English music by Byrd, Tomkins, Bull and Morley
20th-century music by Schoenberg, Berg and Webern

Dances and fantasias, master and pupils; this is a programme that uncovers the legacies of Byrd on the music of Elizabethan England and Schoenberg on twentieth century Vienna. Byrd and his compatriots simply couldn’t have imagined the sound of the modern piano, but to Karim Said’s ears it establishes a link to the yearning singing qualities of the viol consort. Said intersperses the music of both alongside their pupils and followers in a programme that straddles the centuries and celebrates the invention, creative flowering and common threads of two very different musical eras.
