The spiritual in music

Adès The Four Quarters 20’
Beethoven String Quartet in A minor Op 132 44’

Whilst not sacred music in any conventional sense, Beethoven’s spacious late quartet displays his spiritual beliefs. The central movement – one of his most sublime creations – is explicitly designated as a hymn of thanks to the Divine, written as the composer convalesced after serious illness. Thomas Adès references both the natural and the spiritual world. A bewitching fantasy of tremulous energy and a shimmering beauty, The Four Quarters charts the course of a single day from nightfall to the mythical contemplative ‘25th hour’, where circadian rhythms and the natural order seem suspended and a deeper consciousness becomes possible.
