Thomas Larcher Madhares 18’
Britten String Quartet No.1 26’
Beethoven String Quartet in E minor, Op.59 No.2 35’
Britten wrote his elegant, richly atmospheric First Quartet in his late twenties, rating it ‘my best piece so far’. Beethoven’s own E-minor Quartet contains a cosmic Adagio composed while ‘contemplating the music of the spheres’.
Named after a ‘Utopian place’ in Crete, Madhares (2007) unveils a wide but intimately detailed soundscape, from tiny pizzicatos and wiry high glissandos to throbbing chords and thin gossamer melodies.
