Britten Canticle III “Still Falls the Rain” 12’
Walton Façade 39’

In her final concert with the Ludwig Orchestra at this year’s festival, the multi-talented Barbara Hannigan both conducts and narrates Walton and poet Edith Sitwell’s ‘entertainment’ which captures the breezy, laconic spirit of the 1920s while also exploring the melancholia hiding just below the surface.

Sitwell’s poem Still Falls the Rain is very different in mood. Subtitled ‘The Raids, 1940, Night and Dawn’, it is a mystical elegy set to music of stark beauty by Britten. Poet Fiona Sampson re-traces the creative journey travelled by Sitwell.
