Haydn Symphony No.49 ‘La Passione’ 24’
Gershwin Suite from Girl Crazy 12’
Girl Crazy, the Gershwin brothers’ 1930 hit show, is as full of irresistible tunes – Bidin’ My Time, Embraceable You and I Got Rhythm among them – as you are entitled to expect. If (as seems likely) Haydn’s ‘Passion’ Symphony really was written for Holy Week, the extremes of emotion it explores – from the sombre to the turbulent – could hardly be more fitting.
Stravinsky’s ballet Pulcinella is based on rather lighter 18th-century music by Pergolesi and others, but relies largely on irreverent orchestration to give it the unmistakable flavour of its composer.
