Crossing the threshold: Barbara Hannigan’s choice of two totemic works separated by exactly a century seem to hover between one world and the next. Grisey’s last work is a song cycle contemplating death set to music of glittering intricacy and savage beauty, whilst Schoenberg’s early tone-poem moves from restless foreboding to a radiant transformation in a farewell to a lavish late-Romantic soundworld. When the focus turns to a single instrument, the dark depths and multi-layered lines of Bach’s suites themselves seem to transcend and transform their humble origins in dance.
