Basil Coleman directed the first performance of Billy Budd at the Royal Opera House in 1951 and was fundamental to bringing Britten’s works to a wider audience. As well as premiering many of Britten’s operas on both stage and screen, his musical insight, paired with his creative flair for spectacular staging, perfectly complemented Britten’s scores.
We are delighted to be joined for this special Q&A by Stephen Barnham, executor of Basil Coleman’s will. This established The Basil Coleman Memorial Fund which has helped the realisation of this year’s new production of Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Freelance director Will Kerley will also discuss his interviews with Basil in 2004, offering a fascinating insight into his relationship with Britten and the 1951 production of Billy Budd.
Tickets includes a glass of wine & nibbles.
