Friends Event: Explore Ely Tour

Wednesday 17 June, Depart 9am from Aldeburgh & Snape Maltings, returning 11pm

Part of Friends Events

After the success of our Ely tour in 2018, we are delighted to be returning to the city to discover more about its captivating past with a brand new tour.

We begin with lunch in the medieval undercroft of Julia’s Tearooms, followed by a visit to Oliver Cromwell’s House nearby. Cromwell and his family lived here during the pivotal decade which saw him rise from local gentry to leader of the New Model Army, changing the political landscape of Britain forever. The house recreates 17th-century domestic life and our guided tour will explore the origins of Ely’s most divisive resident.

Afterwards, we will have a curator-guided tour of the national Stained Glass Museum.

The museum contains over 100 original pieces dating from as early as the 13th century, including works by William Morris and John Piper.

There will also be some time to take in the sights of the cathedral at your leisure before a two-course dinner in the Almonry. We’ll then enjoy this evening’s performance by Tenebrae from premium reserved seats.
