Michael Tippett’s vitality in old age and impressive daily working discipline are abundantly apparent in Mischa Scorer’s 1991 documentary.
Interviewed at home in the Sussex countryside, entertaining musician friends and working on the manuscript of New Year, his final dance-opera work, Tippett reflects on a late flowering in a long musical life. He speaks frankly of his homosexuality as well as the importance of the outside world to his work. Very much at ease on camera, at times talking directly to the lens, Tippett gives the sense of a man engaged with contemporary ideas and relaxed in the company of his younger collaborators.
Oliver Soden will be signing copies of his book Michael Tippett: The Biography in the cinema foyer after the screening.
