The Maltings Gallery

We are delighted to welcome Helen Riches to The Maltings Gallery as one of our featured Aldeburgh Festival exhibitions.

Ordering nature around in a way to please the eye is a thread that runs through Helen Riches’ work. Hardly surprising – she has enjoyed careers in both graphic and garden design. It’s easy to see how that has influenced the way she constructs her paintings. There is a layered effect that nods towards print making and the subject matter nearly always involves plants and landscapes in some way.

Helen’s first experience of Suffolk was as a student at Norwich School of Art. Despite being drenched by four days of rain while wild camping on the Dunwich cliffs on a drawing expedition, a seed was sown. Several decades later she and her Norfolk born husband David spend much of their time in the village Walberswick plein air painting, or setting up still life floral arrangements from their coastal style garden.

Helen was born in Belfast and is still a frequent visitor, but she also enjoys farflung travel with a sketch book. She and David have two children and a patient, pleinair loving rescue dog.

There will be a private view for this exhibition, with a chance to meet the artist, on Saturday 8 June 4pm-6pm.
