All quartet writers and players trace their lineage back to Haydn. The Castalian Quartet's intuitive, unaffected musicianship is perfectly placed to capture his energy and intricacies.
Haydn Quartet Op.76 No.2 in D minor 23’
Edmund Finnis Aloysius (Aldeburgh Festival commission, UK premiere) 16’
Britten Quartet No.2 31’
Nowhere is Britten’s debt to Purcell more openly expressed than in his second quartet. Yet for all its stylistic references, this is radiant, richly original music that often seems hewn from the same rock as Peter Grimes just months earlier.
There is emotional intensity and hints of the past too in Finnis’ quartet, its languorously shifting melodic patterns circling round a Byrd hymn tune.
