Nowhere is Britten’s debt to Purcell more openly expressed than in his second quartet. Yet for all its stylistic references, this is radiant, richly original music that often seems hewn from the same rock as Peter Grimes just months earlier.
There is emotional intensity and hints of the past too in Finnis’ quartet, its languorously shifting melodic patterns circling round a Byrd hymn tune.
