A symphony, a ballet and a carnival

Marin Alsop conductor

Prokofiev Symphony No.1 ‘Classical’ 14’
Saint-Saëns Carnival of the Animals 21’
Ravel Mother Goose (complete) 29’

A concert overflowing with music of fizzing virtuosity, tender charm and memorable melodies. Prokofiev’s lovable tribute to Haydn is the perfect opener to two pieces that surely appeal to the child in all of us. First, Saint-Saëns’ touching, skilled and laugh-out loud funny fantasia of animals, the famous Swan serenely gliding through this fast-paced parade. Then Ravel’s ballet score, evoking the evergreen characters of children’s verse – Beauty and the Beast, Tom Thumb, Prince Charming – with music as radiantly warm and poignantly bittersweet as the memories of a sunlit childhood summer.
