Of all Maltings premieres, perhaps none carries more emotive power than Britten’s final quartet. The slow fade of its endlessly circling conclusion is added an aching poignancy by being first performed in public just days after his death. Yet, together with another late work, Mozart’s exquisite and expansive quintet, it shares a radiance and exhilarating energy and invention that bestows on both works their deserved status as chamber music masterpieces. The Belcea Quartet opens its first Festival Residency in nearly a decade with Haydn, the overriding musical passion of the engineer and acoustician Derek Sugden who helped Britten to create his concert hall.
