Between the muscular energy and excitement of Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet – the work that won him his first Stalin prize – and the neo-classical irony of his Third String Quartet lies the cataclysm of the Second World War. Between this thought-provoking pairing, Jörg Widmann conjures shadows, in the work with which he overcame a long reluctance to write for his own instrument and learned, he says, ‘to view the clarinet from a completely different perspective’.
