Songs of love: fresh and faded, thwarted and jaded. Bernstein’s allusions to family and friends make Arias and Barcarolles a deeply personal song cycle from this man of the theatre. Britten approached popular song from a different place but his cabaret numbers are far from stiff little parodies; heard afresh, they are sweetly ardent musical love letters, giddy with excitement and angst. Lucy Schaufer, as at home in musical theatre as on the opera stage, completes this song-circle with a set from contemporary singer-songwriters.
