Modern madrigals cradle two masterpieces for the solo guitar.
Ben Parry conductor
Jesse Flowers guitar
Thea Musgrave Four Madrigals 8’
Tippett The Weeping Babe 3’
Two Madrigals 5’
Britten Nocturnal 19’
Roxanna Panufnik O hearken thou 2’
Judith Weir Love Bade Me Welcome 4’
Ben Parry Spring Sonnets 6’
Tippett The Blue Guitar 17’
Five Spirituals from A Child of Our Time 10’
Tippett’s experience as a conductor and his love for Tudor composers produced miniatures of delicate textures and vivid word-painting. But his Spirituals contain a world of communal suffering and hope that is barely contained by their deceptively simple refrains.
Britten’s exquisite transformation of a John Dowland song and Tippett’s poetry and painting-inspired fantasia show an expressive depth and mastery of the guitar that befits their first performer, Julian Bream.
