Introduced by Humphrey Burton
Britten was living in America when he first read Crabbe’s poem The Borough, the inspiration for Peter Grimes. In 1946, a young Leonard Bernstein conducted the American premiere at Tanglewood, the famous summer music school. Filmed 50 years later, this film documents the original Bernstein performance, interwoven with scenes from the 1996 anniversary production under the baton of Seiji Ozawa. Behind the scenes footage, performer reminiscences and live concert excerpts are skilfully edited together in Barbara Willis Sweete’s prize-winning film.
