All events until the end of June are cancelled or postponed, including Aldeburgh Festival, and the shops and cafes are temporarily closed in response to the Coronavirus pandemic. The site at Snape Maltings is still open for those who want to enjoy the fresh air and expansive natural environment of the River Alde estuary. More info

Hesse Student Scheme

Applications are now closed for Hesse students for our 2020 Aldeburgh Festival

Each year, we invite 18-25-year olds, with a love of music and an interest in a career in the Arts or Events Management, to be part of our Hesse Student Scheme. Students will gain first-hand experience of one of the world’s leading classical music festivals, helping behind the scenes, supporting the artistic teams and having an amazing opportunity to attend a wide variety of festival events.

The scheme offers the chance to help with the day-to-day running of the festival, meet Heads of Departments at Snape Maltings and learn about the work behind running an internationally renowned arts organisation.

What do Hesse Students do?

The roles vary widely from year to year depending on the events taking place. You could be helping to set up and run our Beach Stage; assisting with the festival walks; helping our events team at pre-concert receptions; bus conducting on coaches; page turning for rehearsals and concerts; stewarding galleries; programme selling and helping with office duties.

There will be some evening work and our Hesse Students are required to stay in Snape Maltings for the duration of their time with us. At the end of each week, Hesse students traditionally put on a performance of their own at The Pumphouse, Aldeburgh, which always attracts an enthusiastic audience.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for people with excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work collaboratively within team, a willingness to help with all kinds of tasks no matter how big or small. A good sense of humour and a love of music is essential. Although candidates do not need to have a detailed knowledge of music, some jobs, such as page turning, do require a high level of competence.

A full UK driving license is also desirable but not essential.

What we offer

Although this is an unpaid work experience opportunity, we will provide you with:

• Reimbursement of travel expenses to and from Snape Maltings (at 35p per mile via car or with valid travel receipts)
• Bed and breakfast accommodation in Aldeburgh
• One hot meal provided free of charge at one of the Snape Maltings catering outlets, plus a per diem for additional food purchases during the day
• A contribution towards uniform/clothing (if required)
